MANILA ― The National Bureau of Investigation (NBI) filed another criminal complaint against Sen. Leila de Lima before the Department of Justice (DOJ).

Justice Secretary Vitaliano Aguirre II said that second complaint filed by NBI against De Lima is in connection to the claim of suspected big-time drug lord Kerwin Espinosa that he gave De Lima PHP8 million to support her campaign for a Senate seat.

It will be recalled during the Senate inquiry last November that Kerwin paid millions of pesos in protection money to police officials and Senator Leila De Lima, whom he claimed to have received some PHP8 million through her former driver-bodyguard and lover Ronnie Dayan, for her campaign in the May 2016 elections.

Aside from De Lima, also included in the complaint are Dayan and Kerwin.

Aguirre said the new case would not be consolidated with the earlier five cases.

"I think the new case will be resolved separately because I believe the first four cases will be resolved already by this month," he said.

It was the sixth criminal case filed against De Lima after she was implicated in illegal drug trade in the country in both inquiries of the House of Representatives and the Senate.

The five earlier complaints were filed by the Volunteers Against Crime and Corruption, National Bureau of Investigation, former NBI deputy directors Ruel Lasala and Reynaldo Esmeralda, high-profile inmate Jaybee Sebastian and House leaders.

The case for disobedience to summons filed by House leaders was already filed before the Quezon City Regional Trial Court, while the other four have already been submitted for resolution.
